WaterTech Industry Landscape - Independent Study
ClimateHaven has partnered with the Regional Water Authority, New Haven’s local water utility, to develop the Water Innovation Hub. This hub will foster the development of novel technologies and address technical challenges in water and aligned industries. The Yale Center for Business and Environment is supporting the Water Innovation Hub through an independent study on the WaterTech Industry Landscape. Two graduate students will be recruited to carry out this study. The workload is equivalent to a full-credit semester long course: 3 credits YSE/4 units SOM.
Battery Energy Storage System Market Analysis
This independent study has been created in partnership with Avangrid-Iberdrola and will take place in New Haven. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) play a crucial role in enabling the adoption of renewable energy sources. As the world transitions toward clean energy, BESS provides the flexibility needed to balance intermittent renewable generation and enhance grid stability.
This project encompasses conducting market analysis by region and technology with a mind to competitive strategy and growth. Students will be working with Avangrid staff along with CBEY’s Julia Nojeim and Stu DeCew. Publicly available data can be leveraged for this project. Final deliverables include a report with financial models and a presentation to the Avangrid/CBEY team.

2024 – 2025 Academic Year Independent Study Opportunities
Geothermal Equipment
This independent study has been created to fill the gap in clean energy development courses that currently exists across campus. Students can take courses in Renewable Energy Project Finance, Energy Justice, Financing Green Technologies, Utilities, and Energy Systems Analysis, but afterwards have no course that brings these topics together to give students experience in the realities of project development. Rather than waiting to be taught these processes on the job, this independent study will put students ahead of the curve as they learn and practice project development during their time on campus.
This project is in partnership with Yale’s Office of Facilities and will take place in New Haven. The independent study will encompasses evaluating applicable policies and incentives, gauging site considerations, completing cost benefit analysis and financial modeling, working with contractors, and assessing project timelines. Students will be working with Julie Paquette and Michael Ghilani of Yale’s Office of Facilities along with CBEY’s Julia Nojeim and Stu DeCew.

Yale Forest Solar Feasibility
This independent study has been created to fill the gap in clean energy development courses that currently exists across campus. Students can take courses in Renewable Energy Project Finance, Energy Justice, Financing Green Technologies, Utilities, and Energy Systems Analysis, but afterwards have no course that brings these topics together to give students experience in the realities of project development.
This project will encompass evaluating applicable policies and incentives, assessing land usage and environmental impact, completing cost benefit analysis and financial modeling, and recommending project design to maximize site usage. Students will work with Joe Orefice and Laura Green along with CBEY’s Julia Nojeim and Stu DeCew.
