Technology + Sustainability: A Conversation with Spectral Energy

Spectral Energy is a system integration and cleantech development company in Amsterdam, Netherlands that develops turn-key solutions for energy storage, portable power, and smart-grids. In the summer of 2017, they launched "Jouliette", a new platform for setting up local energy markets based on blockchain technology.

Via videoconference, Philip Gladek (CEO/CTO) and Michael Mareels (Electronics & Data Architect) will showcase their experience in deploying blockchain as well as the trends they see in the energy transition and how Spectral fits into the big picture.

Philip is a multidisciplinary systems engineer with a background in business strategy. His professional career has been focused on developing projects and products in the areas of clean-technology, integrated resource systems, and smart energy solutions. He is one of the co-founders of Metabolic, a consulting and venture-building company that applies systems-thinking to tackle global sustainability challenges. In 2015, Philip founded Spectral, a rapidly growing system integration and smart-grid technology company based in Amsterdam, where he is currently CEO / CTO and responsible for leading R&D, product deployment, and cutting-edge smart-grid projects.

Michael is an electrical engineering and sensor specialist educated in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. He has a wide portfolio of both hardware and software projects for companies including ASML, Philips, and Neways Technologies. He joined Spectral in February 2017 as a hardware and embedded software architect, focusing on energy management and blockchain applications. His specializations are machine-to-machine communications, Internet of Things module design, rapid prototyping, and manufacturing engineering. With this combination of skills, Michael prototypes printed circuit boards, selects optimal components based on requirements, and creates designs for mass production.
