As part of its impact-driven strategy, the Yale Center for Business and the Environment (CBEY) launched a certificate in Financing and Deploying Clean Energy in July 2019 (FDCE). This non-degree program was created as a pilot for the University and is CBEY’s deepest foray into online education to date. The FDCE program trains working professionals and develops their skills in four key areas of the clean energy sector through four core online courses. These key areas span across several academic disciplines in environmental studies and management, including law, political science, economics, engineering, finance, and management.
At the moment, the four core courses are Clean Energy Policy; Technology Transitions; Renewable Energy Project Finance; and Innovation. Our team is now looking for a talented individual to expand the breadth of the program by building and delivering two new core courses: Energy Justice; and Clean Energy Development.
The mission of the FDCE program is to accelerate the deployment of clean energy and mitigate climate change.
True to its mission to educate and inspire interdisciplinary leaders through pioneering business solutions to systemic environmental problems, CBEY wants to further grow its online programming, including but not limited to growing the current course offering of the FDCE program in the areas of Energy Justice and Clean Energy Development.
The Program Manager will be an expert in either Energy Justice or Clean Energy Development, and will collaborate with a team of focused staff and faculty at CBEY as well as at the Yale Center for Environmental Justice (YCEJ), coordinate with other Yale groups to produce content, and serve as a key liaison for Yale faculty and external experts on clean energy topics.
We are looking for an energetic individual to join our team and in the long term own the Energy Justice and Clean Energy Development aspects of our work.
The main goals of this position are to:
- lead the production of online courses on Energy Justice and Clean Energy Development for an audience of working professionals, together with Yale faculty, staff, and external experts;
- support the development and integration of new online modules as part of an ambitious and rigorous online curriculum, and as the case may be support their integration with on-campus programming;
- foster, on-campus and online, the broadening of an engaged community of informed actors who can accelerate the clean energy transition; and
- guide and mentor online cohorts to successfully complete rigorous academic activities at CBEY.

The Program Manager will (i) lead and manage the production of two new online courses on Energy Justice and Clean Energy Development with Yale faculty and staff, external experts, and other Yale departments and units, (ii) lead the delivery of these courses as part of the FDCE program, (iii) assist with the marketing of the FDCE program/these courses, and possibly contribute to the independent promotion of these courses to the intended audience, and (iv) contribute to creating a holistic approach to clean energy programming at Yale.
Course Development and Production
- Work in close collaboration with Yale faculty and CBEY staff to outline critical skills and knowledge outcomes, create all content, and ensure cohesion between courses;
- Research Energy Justice and Clean Energy Development topics, create a resource library, and become the key staff expert on these topics for the CBEY and the YCEJ teams;
- Recruit Yale faculty members to teach in the program and collaborate with Yale staff on faculty outreach;
- Collaborate with key staff and faculty of the YCEJ to ensure that YCEJ’s goals and mission are taken into account in the design of the Energy Justice course and collaborate on co-branding;
- Identify external experts and lead outreach and recruiting;
- Identify assignments and activities to reinforce the learning objectives (including discussions, case studies, role plays, research activities, qualitative and quantitative quizzes etc.) and craft language and explanations for review by faculty;
- Manage the pre-production, production, and post-production process with the Yale Broadcast Studio (production plans, testing, studio scheduling, coordinating the production of media assets, with or without an external design firm, manage faculty recording or interviews with film crew and studio, initial cuts reviews, editing instructions to senior editors, etc.);
- Produce and edit course pages in Canvas.
Delivery and Operations
- Manage the Energy Justice and Clean Energy Development course delivery process with TAs, faculty, and other staff;
- Serve as the first point of contact from staff for the online cohorts in the areas of Justice and Development;
- Take charge of Canvas site publishing activities (e.g., timely rotating links to pages, create weekly announcements, etc.), using the existing delivery processes created and documented by CBEY;
- Monitor online forums on a regular basis and make sure participants have a rich experience and interact in a respectful manner;
- Perform quality control and testing of online modules before and after publishing (e.g., checking that links are live, that quizzes work properly, that solutions to assignments are posted etc.) and coordinate with Research Assistants and other Yale staff to fix problems as they arise, with the aim to deliver an enjoyable and flawless experience to the user in coordination with the YSE Online Programs Coordinator in the YSE Dean’s Office;
- Contribute to developing best practices for Yale-initiated live sessions and curriculum delivery with the Program Delivery Manager;
- In collaboration with faculty, hire, train and coach teaching assistants working on the program on policies and processes (Canvas weekly rotations, cohort communications, etc.);
- While the program is in session, respond to questions from the cohort of participants, engage and schedule live sessions with faculty or external experts, and coordinate grading and exercises with teaching fellows and faculty;
- As public health guidelines allow, support the design, coordination and facilitation of at least one annual one week-long in-person program for cohorts of 75-100 participants in collaboration with other CBEY staff;
- Support the marketing and promotion activities of the FDCE program as it relates to Energy Justice and Clean Energy Development topics;
- Contribute to the creation of content such as participant spotlights, op-eds, and material to be featured in newsletters, on the CBEY site, or in the Clean Energy Finance Forum;
Clean Energy Programs Administration
- Contribute to creating a holistic approach to clean energy programming at Yale;
- Deliver clean energy event series online; and
- Coordinate with Yale staff to support the administrative side of this effort (payments, admissions, alumni, etc…).
Required Education & Experience
Master’s degree in environmental science, environmental management, MBA, or higher
Required Licenses or Certifications
- An inclusive and flexible approach to collaborating with a wide range of individuals, i.e., tenured and practitioner faculty at Yale, core staff at CBEY and YCEJ, key staff from different units across Yale;
- A strong passion for and interest in multidisciplinary climate change mitigation strategies, environmental education, online education and world-class teaching;
- Advanced professional expertise in at least one of the areas listed below:
- Clean energy development;
- Energy justice;
- Ability to grasp both quantitative and qualitative concepts and to research knowledge gaps in the field of clean energy;
- Significant experience in curriculum development and delivery at the graduate or professional level;
- Exceptional administrative, planning, organizational and project management skills with proven ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects;
- Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse constituency, including staff, students, faculty, and other community members;
- Ability to guide, supervise and coach student project teams;
- Superior writing, editing, communication and interpersonal skills; and
- Strong time management skills and proven ability to work as part of a team as well as independently.
- Expertise in clean energy development or energy justice frameworks;
- Significant experience coordinating work across units, functions, and departments;
- Significant experience writing, web-authoring, and developing multimedia assets;
- Significant experience translating hard technical concepts for lay audiences or clients; and
- Experience researching market gaps for program design.
Preferred Qualifications (Education, Experience) & Skills
In addition to the required qualifications and skills above, the ideal candidate for this position has:
- An MESc or MEM from the Yale School of the Environment, or MBA from the Yale School of Management;
- Experience with online learning; and
- Experience working with complex partnerships.

Job Location and Duration
New Haven, CT, but hybrid, depending on directions from Yale University Leadership and CBEY protocols still being developed. This is initially a two-year duration with an opportunity for renewal based on program performance.

- Able to take meetings, either in person (COVID allowing) or on Zoom for several hours at a time
- Able to coordinate video shoots in a professional studio
- Able to accompany guests who are walking across campus
