Executive Voices in Sustainability 2018:

Executive Voices in Sustainability: Rob Emhoff

What brought you to Yale?

It would be easy to say there was one particular aspect of the program that brought me here but it was truly the whole package. From brand name, to the integrated core curriculum, and the focus on building leaders for business and society I felt it was in perfect alignment.

The unique Sustainability focus left a lasting impression on me as well and was the logical step to get ahead of today’s and tomorrow’s problems facing our society. I attended a few on and off campus events and the community that I witnessed forming and already in place from those meetings made the decision to become a member of the Class of 2018 an easy one.

How have you impacted sustainable practices in your career?

To be direct - not much at all to date. My goal during this program and after is to gain the tools and skillset necessary to not only bring concrete reasons for change and investment in sustainability to the boardroom but also the ability to lead and implement those teams necessary to execute on those ideas.

What challenges do you see for sustainability in your industry?

The major challenge is showing that the investment may not directly impact the bottom line but rather improve the social, environmental and overall corporate citizenship of my firm. Companies need to see the vision that sustainable practices will have a much more lasting impact on the business and our community then a short term “going green” initiative. Shaking off the over utilization of “greenwashing” and start moving towards an idea of doing more with less and we can really start to see changes in the Financial and Risk Markets.

Tell us one thing about yourself that might surprise your classmates.

I love to challenge myself and help raise money for numerous Cancer related charities and causes every year ranging from completing the NYC Triathlon for the Ronald McDonald House, Growing a ridiculous mustache for Movember (yes, I have pics), Biking across MA for the Pan-Mass Challenge for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and competing in the Wall Street Decathlon for the Pediatric Cancer at Sloan Memorial. In reality though, my biggest talent and surprising fact is my ability to saber any bottle of champagne/sparkling wine.
