Executive Voices in Sustainability: Michael Hudson

What brought you to Yale?

As my professional career began exposing me to business practices across various countries and cultures, the correlation between the leadership I most admired and holders of advanced degrees was unparalleled. In identifying my growth needs, it became quickly evident that the value of the MBA degree would provide me the right platform to exponentially grow my career. In particular, the high-touch atmosphere at SOM, evident throughout the admissions process, guided my decision, knowing that Yale’s program would provide the perfect fit for both personal and professional growth.

How have you impacted sustainable practices in your career?

The parallel that can be drawn between sustainability and its impact on real estate portfolio strategy and operations is continuingly evolving in applicability. Advancements in technology are quickly changing how business is done, redefining the industry’s landscape while positioning sustainability at the forefront of tangible success factors. The impact of sustainability is top consideration in the asset management decisions made daily in our business as the ability to optimize sustainability’s impact to the business is ubiquitous in shaping the future landscape of corporate real estate and investment.

What challenges do you see for sustainability in your industry?

Although real estate management has a symbiotic relationship with sustainability, optimal sustainability goals and objectives do not always parallel the prudent financial decision in a given scenario. As real estate strategy evolves, the challenge becomes marrying the financial case to drive the right business decision while accounting for best-in-class sustainability practices. How we as leaders in the industry make that case to account for the growing number of intangibles will continue to test our abilities to adapt and plan around an ever-changing market.
