Executive Voices in Sustainability 2018:

Executive Voices in Sustainability: Joseph Kwasniewski

What brought you to Yale?

There were many reasons; however, the sustainability concentration was very high on my list. As I have been developing a keen interest in social responsibility and social impact for some time, I have been thoughtfully considering my goals and objectives for the future. In order to have lasting impact, and to do so responsibly, there must be a plan for sustainability to ensure that these efforts are perpetuated in a way where they are integrated into everyday life. Having begun to explore the elements of social sustainability, I have identified very clear relationships between the environment and the economy, which have truly piqued my interest and led me to pursue overall sustainability.

How have you impacted sustainable practices in your career?

My organization, The Port Chester Carver Center, is Going Green! Our new initiative is an effort to do our part to help save the environment, energy, natural resources, and costs. This initiative will encourage staff and shareholders to work together towards a common goal of sustainability engaging all departments in new ways. Employees will be invited to join a voluntary “Green Team” to drive the mission and assessment while creating new ideas for sustainability.

What challenges do you see for sustainability in your industry?

As a leader in the non-profit industry, I can safely say that sustainability is just not seen as a priority. I of course do not agree with that ideology; however, organizations are consistently becoming more lean as resources are being more competitive to obtain which therefore causes distraction from something like sustainability which many would consider discretionary. With that said, I believe that a sound sustainability plan would augment efforts to improve the bottom line for many non-profits and I think that the mindset could change for many non-profit leaders through effective awareness initiatives.
