Joel A. Tickner

Joel A. Tickner is a pioneer in making chemistry safer for people and the environment and founded the Green Chemistry and Commerce Council, a network of more than 70 companies, including major retailers and brands, dedicated to promoting safer products.

Tickner is an internationally respected expert on how chemicals in everyday life can adversely affect adults and children and he has worked tirelessly to advocate for the adoption of safer alternatives in household products, toys and more.

He is also an expert on environmental health, green chemistry, chemicals policy, pollution prevention and risk assessment.

Tickner’s research focuses on the development of innovative scientific methods and policies to implement and accelerate the design and application of safer products and manufacturing processes. He is an associate professor of environmental health at UMass Lowell, where he teaches regulatory science and policy, cleaner production and risk assessment.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and environmental science at Colby College, a master of science in environmental studies at the University of Montana and a doctoral degree in cleaner production at UMass Lowell.
