Deepa_Shanmugam

Deepa is an undergraduate at Yale College intending to major in Statistics and Data Science with a certificate in Energy Studies. She is interested in the intersection of climate science and markets, specifically how environmental variability shapes commodity outcomes. Her work focuses on translating complex climate patterns into insights that improve decision-making in agricultural and energy systems.

Deepa has conducted research on the South Asian monsoon’s effects on agriculture at both George Mason University and Yale, analyzing how rainfall variability influences crop yields and market dynamics. She has presented her past monsoon research at the AGU 2024 and AMS 2025 Annual Meetings. She also placed third in the 2024 International Climate Science Olympiad and traveled to COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, where she presented her work on nature-based solutions for sea-level rise in Small Island Developing States.

She is passionate about developing market-based approaches to decarbonization and hopes to contribute to more adaptive and resilient systems in the face of climate change.
