Green Markets: Voluntary and Information Based Approaches to Environmental Management

Two observations provide motivation for this seminar. First, voluntary and information-based approaches to environmental management are becoming increasingly common. Environmental managers should thus be familiar with the approaches, along with their advantages and limitations. Second, students, advocates and managers are often searching for ways outside of formal regulatory contexts to promote more pro-environmental behavior. There exists a sizable academic literature on the subject, but rarely is it covered in courses on environmental management. Readings span economics, psychology and political science. Class occasionally has a lecture format, but for the most part, we have structured discussion, rotating responsibility for presentation and critique.
