Monty Simus (YC '89), Plastic Pollution and Cleaning Up Our Oceans

Join CBEY for a conversation with Monty Simus as he returns from IPC5 in Busan and reflects on the global plastics treaty talks, why reducing plastic pollution in our oceans is simpler than you think, and his path to working to clean up our oceans.

Montgomery (Monty) Simus is the Global Director of Public Affairs, Policy, and Blue Finance at The Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit organization based in Rotterdam focused on developing technologies to eliminate ocean plastic, having removed millions of kilograms to date through projects in eight countries. He also conducts interdisciplinary PhD research on the Pebble Mine project in Bristol Bay, Alaska, examining the conflicts between energy transition minerals and Indigenous rights amid global environmental concerns. In addition to his role at The Ocean Cleanup, Monty was an inaugural Impact Leader-In-Residence at Harvard University in 2023 and serves as an Associate at the Harvard-China Project on Energy, Economy, and Environment. With a background in impact investing and philanthropic initiatives that have benefited millions in the Global South, he holds a Bachelor of Arts from Yale and a Master in Public Policy from Harvard, with interests spanning climate change, resilient infrastructure, and the water-energy-food nexus.

This event is part of CBEY's Career Pathways in Business and the Environment program.
