Career Pathways in Business and the Environment: A Conversation with Megan Morikawa

Dr. Megan Morikawa is the Global Sustainability Office Director at Iberostar where she leads the sustainability team in scientific-driven actions for a sustainable ocean economy and responsible tourism model. This work is seen through Iberostar’s Wave of Change movement, an initiative based on three action lines: circular economy, responsible seafood consumption and coastal health. The company plans to send no waste to landfill and source all its seafood from responsible sources by 2025 and to be carbon neutral in its operations and supply chain and to have all ecosystems that surround Iberostar properties improving in ecological health alongside profitable tourism by 2030.

Megan is passionate about helping tourism serve as a force for good. She serves as a Trustee of The Travel Foundation, co-chair of the Tourism Action Coalition for a Sustainable Ocean, and as co-chair of the World Economic Forum Global Futures Council on Sustainable Tourism. She also actively contributes to the UNWTO and UNEP Advisory Council for the One Planet Sustainable Tourism Network, the Planet Committee of the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance and Sustainability Taskforce of the World Travel and Tourism Council. Through these forums, she aims to showcase lessons learned from the Wave of Change movement as examples to inspire the sector and push forward innovation in private sector contributions towards sustainable development.
